Liposomal Glutathione

Glutathione is an intracellular tripeptide made from glutamate, cysteine and glycine that cells synthesise internally in two ATP-dependent steps rather than relying on direct dietary uptake in its final form.

Glutathione levels inside cells depend on two ATP-dependent enzymes: glutamate–cysteine ligase, which links glutamate and cysteine, and glutathione synthetase, which adds glycine to form the complete tripeptide. These synthetic enzymes are expressed in many tissues, such as liver and kidneys, circulating red and white blood cells, and secretory glands including pancreas and salivary glands, allowing glutathione to be produced in diverse cell types. In different tissues, glutathione is put to work by several enzyme families: glutathione peroxidases and glutathione reductase manage the GSH/GSSG pair in red blood cells, liver and lungs, glutathione S-transferases in liver and gut form glutathione conjugates with many small reactive molecules, and glutaredoxins in structures such as the lens of the eye use glutathione to make and reverse disulfide links on proteins. Across organs including blood, liver, lungs, kidneys, gut, brain and immune cells, these local glutathione systems support internal redox and conjugation reactions alongside other redox-active molecules in their respective environments.

Our liposomal Glutathione uses non-GMO sunflower-derived phospholipids for encapsulation to surround reduced glutathione inside membrane-like spheres. In our Liposomal Delivery Technology, glutathione is encapsulated within microscopic sunflower-derived phospholipid bilayers, the same structural motif that forms phospholipid cell membranes. Instead of leaving glutathione as a free, dissolved tripeptide, this approach encapsulates it in a liposomal matrix of phospholipids and glutathione, similar to liposomal systems investigated in the scientific literature.

Liposomes are dynamic phospholipid bilayers built from the same general type of phospholipid assemblies and bilayer architecture found in cell membranes. Both are dynamic lipid structures with fluid behaviour and the ability to curve, bud, and reorganise. In cell biology, membranes routinely exchange vesicles with the same bilayer structure during exocytosis, endocytosis, and vesicle trafficking. Liposomal systems have been the subject of numerous studies as delivery vehicles for supplement ingredients, including nutrients like glutathione.

Liposomal glutathione has been evaluated in human studies by monitoring the temporal accumulation of glutathione in blood compartments after supplementation. In several comparative studies, liposomal and non-liposomal glutathione were administered to participants to quantify differences in blood glutathione responses.
